You receive a letter in MijnOverheid, calculate an allowance at the Tax Administration and apply for a subsidy at RVO. The Netherlands has no single portal for every money matter. This guide explains where to find Dutch taxes, benefits and subsidies online, what each official website does and where you actually apply.
Understand the four labels first
A tax is money charged by government. A toeslag is an income-tested contribution towards specific costs. A social-security benefit replaces or supplements income, while a subsidy encourages a particular activity such as home insulation. A commercial eligibility checker cannot make an official decision, so always verify the rules with the responsible authority.
The main government portals
| Portal | Use it for |
|---|---|
| DigiD | Secure login and authorising a helper |
| MijnOverheid | Government mail, registered data and some case statuses |
| Rijksoverheid | Explanations of national rules |
| Mijn Belastingdienst | Personal tax returns and assessments |
| Mijn Toeslagen | Applying for and changing the four national allowances |
| Mijn UWV | Employment and disability benefits |
| Mijn SVB | Child benefit, state pension and other national insurance schemes |
| Your municipality | Social assistance and local low-income schemes |
| RVO | Sustainability and business subsidies |
| NetherlandsWorldwide | Government matters from outside the Netherlands |
DigiD is your key, not your file
DigiD proves your identity when you log in to authorised public organisations. It does not hold all your tax and benefit records; it opens separate portals. Never share your credentials. Use DigiD Authorisation when somebody helps you, so they use their own login and receive only defined access.
DigiD says it never sends a message containing a link or QR code. Type the official address yourself if in doubt. Libraries with an Informatiepunt Digitale Overheid can help with digital government services. Non-digital routes remain available; ask the responsible authority.
MijnOverheid is your inbox and data overview
MijnOverheid contains the Berichtenbox for digital government letters, registered personal information such as income and WOZ property value, and some ongoing-case information. It is generally not where you complete an application. A tax letter may appear there while the return itself belongs in Mijn Belastingdienst.
Enable email alerts but inspect the inbox yourself. MijnOverheid states that notifications are a convenience without legal status. Missing an email does not extend a payment or objection deadline.
Tax Administration and Dienst Toeslagen
Use Mijn Belastingdienst for income-tax returns, provisional and final assessments, and earlier returns. The official guide confirms that online income-tax filing happens there. Business taxes use the separate Mijn Belastingdienst Zakelijk environment.
Dienst Toeslagen administers four income-tested allowances: healthcare, rent, childcare and child budget. Start with the official allowance trial calculation, remembering that it is an estimate and may not handle unusual income, assets or living situations.
Apply, stop an allowance or report changes in Mijn Toeslagen. Payments are advances based on expected annual income. Update income, rent, childcare hours or household composition promptly to reduce the risk of repayment. Child budget can sometimes start automatically, but check yourself if no notice arrives.
UWV and SVB handle different benefits
UWV handles employee-insurance schemes such as WW unemployment benefit, WIA disability benefit and certain sickness, pregnancy and young-disabled-person schemes. In Mijn UWV you apply, report income, upload documents and view decisions. Deadlines can be short: UWV says WW can be requested from one week before until one week after the first unemployment day.
An “UWV toeslag” supplements some benefits towards the social minimum and is not the same as healthcare or rent allowance.
The Social Insurance Bank (SVB) administers child benefit, AOW state pension and several other national-insurance schemes. After a first child is born in the Netherlands, SVB generally sends a letter before the child-benefit application becomes available. Child benefit comes from SVB; income-tested child budget comes from Dienst Toeslagen.
Your municipality provides local income support
Apply to your municipality for general social assistance, special assistance, the individual income supplement, debt help and local participation or child schemes. Conditions and amounts vary, so there is no single national form.
Special social assistance can cover necessary exceptional costs that you cannot pay and that are not reimbursed elsewhere. Ask before paying because retrospective support is often unavailable. Search your municipal site for bijzondere bijstand, individuele inkomenstoeslag, minimaregelingen, kindpakket and tax remission.
RVO lists sustainability subsidies
The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) manages many sustainability and business schemes. Owner-occupiers commonly encounter ISDE for insulation, heat pumps, solar boilers or a heat-network connection. Use the official ISDE eligibility route before ordering work. Product codes, minimum areas, invoices, payment evidence and photographs may matter even when the application happens afterwards.
Municipalities and provinces may offer additional schemes. Check their sites before work starts and verify whether subsidies may be combined.
Rijksoverheid and international situations
Rijksoverheid explains national policy and usually points to the organisation that executes it; applications normally happen elsewhere. If you live or work abroad, have income in two countries or are moving across a border, start with NetherlandsWorldwide. International rules are often not included in ordinary calculators.
A reliable search routine
Start with the life event: lost work, moved home, had a child, became ill or improved your home. Read the government explanation, identify the executing authority and use its calculator. Type the official address yourself, submit the application and save confirmation. Put decision and objection deadlines in your calendar, and report a change to every affected organisation because data is not always shared automatically.
Review income, assets, rent, household composition and current decisions annually. Include confirmed contributions when calculating your fixed expenses, but budget cautiously while an amount remains an advance. Our guide to taxes when renting or owning covers housing charges separately.
Conclusion
Dutch taxes, benefits and subsidies do not live in one portal. MijnOverheid holds your mail, while applications go to the responsible body: the Tax Administration, Dienst Toeslagen, UWV, SVB, municipality or RVO. Check the source, watch deadlines and report changes promptly.
